Many of my poems are shape or concrete poems, where the line breaks, which must occur naturally for the effect to be poetic, physically shape the poem's text. I made no effort to write shape poems--in fact, all of these were drafted in pen or pencil on plain notebook paper. I didn't know they had shape. They lived in that notebook for years, until the mid 80's, when I first typed them into a word processing program. I remember typing the first, then deciding to see what the poem would look like centered on the page. This happened.
